S.C. Hondros & Associates, Inc.
worked closely with Todd and Laura
Pace, Owners of Cranfield Academy,
to design and construct their new child
care center in South Charlotte.
This
second location of Cranfield Academy
is located just south of the intersection
of Ardrey Kell Road and Providence
Road and offers full and part time child
care along with after school care.
During the course of the project a
carefully coordinated effort was made
between S.C. Hondros, Scurry Construction,
and NCDOT to build a
sewer line extension while the widening
of Providence Road was also underway.
The 11,322 SF facility, designed by
the Paces and S.C. Hondros’ in-house
design department, is comprised of 11
child care rooms along with a kitchen,
offices, media center, and reception
area. There are two outdoor playgrounds
on the site.
In order to comply with the City
of Charlotte Post Construction Controls
Ordinance and site constraints, an
underground sand filter was constructed
on the site. The sand filter, designed by Al Broome,
P.E. and
Peyton Woody of S.C. Hondros, can
handle two acres of run-off. It is designed
to treat storm water runoff
through filtration using a sediment
forebay, a sand bed as its primary filter
media, and an underground detention
system.

The system is able to remove
85% of total suspended solids in the
run-off (oil, rubber, and other debris)
and 70% of the total phosphorous load.
The sand filter helps to control the
adverse effects of increased postconstruction
storm water runoff and
non-point source pollution associated
with Development and Redevelopment.
The sand filter requires regular
inspection and maintenance - by removing
impurities and replacing sand. Terry Cloer, Project
Manager, and Bryan Good, Site
Superintendent, insured adherence to the project schedule
so that Cranfield Academy would
be open at the beginning of the 2010-
2011 school year.

Renovation: Shaw Distribution Center |
Shaw Industries
Group, Inc. has awarded S.C. Hondros & Associates,
Inc. a contract for the design and construction of the
renovation
to its 112,394 SF, existing facility at 10901 Texland Boulevard
in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The project will modify the existing building and site
into one
of thirty regional distribution centers for Shaw Industries’ floor
covering division. Concrete wall panels and foundations,
concrete
floor, and exterior concrete paving will be removed to
facilitate
the construction for and installation of twelve new loading
docks. New concrete paving, asphalt paving, and stone
paving
will support increased truck traffic. Two new will-call
drive-in
doors will be installed to serve flooring contractors.
The eighteen-acre site will be redeveloped to comply
with the City of Charlotte’s
Post Construction Controls Ordinance for Storm Water.
While the construction industry
has seen a decrease in the
number of new, ground-up construction projects, there
has been
an upswing in the number of renovation projects. Renovating
and modifying existing facilities is an economical way
to support
a new process or function, while eliminating some of
the costs
associated with new construction. Renovations typically
decrease
the duration of the construction schedule and provide
quicker occupancy for owners. |

SAM N. KLETO, PRESIDENT |
In
October 2009, S.C. Hondros & Associates Inc. became an
Authorized Builder for Nucor Building Systems. In many
very small or very large projects, using a simple rectangular
configuration,
the pre-engineered building system can be very economical
and allow
longer spans at a smaller increase to costs.
As we dig
out of the recession,
we feel that offering flexible, lower cost alternatives
gives us an
increased ability to respond to clients’ budgetary
requirements.
We selected our affiliation with Nucor Building Systems
because of:
- Their strong presence and innovative history
in the steel industry
- Their local headquarters
- The close proximity of their plant in Swansea,
SC (near Columbia)
- The percentage of recycled materials that go
into Nucor Building
Systems projects for LEED credits
- The quality of the product and the support of
the management,
sales, and production staff at Nucor Building Systems
In past projects we have used
masonry and concrete tilt panel wall systems,
in addition to metal wall panels, with pre-engineered
building
systems. We look forward to working with Nucor Building
Systems in
order to provide high quality pre-engineered
packages for our clients. Please contact us so we
can demonstrate how a Nucor Building Systems
package can be your building solution.
